What is "meditation", after all?

A pretty much useless word in desperate search for a meaning. I think there
should be a twenty-year moratorium on its use---along with a fifty-year ban
on the use of such meaningless expressions as "enlightenment."

I once attended a psychiatric conference in which Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche
was speaker. A psychiatrist asked him "What is meditation?" Rinpoche pretended
to look confused and spoke to his translator apparently trying to clarifying
the question. Then he answered: "Meditation? Meditation? I don't know what
that is. Our word for meditation means "paying attention."
