Right. The form the deviation took was importing into Catholicism practiced from other religions. In other words, the behavior deemed deviant was the very widespread behavior of practicing two religions at once. Most people did it. The Catholic authorities―i withdraw the term "fanatics", since that makes you think of cartoons for some reason) were alarmed by the widespread behavior of the European (and later the American and African) peoples.
