I never suspected Americans could be such barbarians.

In this country people would rather steal books. A softer kind of
appropriation. At least such books would after some time surface in
some second-hand bookshop, with the owner's stamps carefully removed.

In some cases - razored out.

A basic difference between communism and capitalism showing itself in
the book-lovers' use of razor-blades?
