The fact that a Zen roshi actually acknowledged his faults and apologized for them is rare indeed....as rare as the proverbial tortoise coming up for air from the bottom of the ocean every thousand or so years and getting that ring around his/her head.  Eido Shimano's apology is definitely a step in the right direction.  May other roshis who have harmed their students or others follow his example.
