Gift establishes new Shinjo Ito Postdoctoral Fellowship in
Buddhist Studies
at UC Berkeley
January 23, 2009
BERKELEY - The Center for Buddhist Studies at the University of
California at Berkeley is pleased to announce the establishment
of the
Shinjo Ito Postdoctoral Fellowship in Buddhist Studies. The new
fellowship is supported by a generous $1 million gift from the
Shinnyo-en Foundation.
The Shinjo Ito Postdoctoral Fellowship in Buddhist Studies will
offer
distinguished recent graduates of doctoral programs around the
world
the opportunity to spend one academic year, with the possibility
for
extension for a second academic year, at UC Berkeley's Center
for
Buddhist Studies. Fellowship recipients will have the
opportunity to
advance their research, as well as to contribute to the vitality
of
the Center for Buddhist Studies intellectual community through
participation in Center events, workshops, and teaching
responsibilities (one course per semester).
The Shinnyo-en Order was established in 1938 by the Most
Venerable
Archbishop Shinjo Ito, who wished to foster among all people,
regardless of spiritual belief, a culture of active public
service as
a way to achieve lasting understanding and harmony. UC
Berkeley's
Center for Buddhist Studies is honored to enter into this
partnership
with Shinnyo-en, in the interest of promoting excellence in the
field
of Buddhist Studies.
Applications for the first Shinjo Ito Postdoctoral Fellowship in
Buddhist Studies will be solicited in the Fall of 2009, for
appointment to begin in the fall of 2010.
