Bryan Magee points out that philosophy doesn't seem to progress in an orderly fashion. The science of today is built on the science of yesterday, and bigger and better breakthroughs have been made by a stream of great minds. But in philosophy centuries go by without any great philosophers. His endpoint is Schopenhauer.
