Now that is interesting, since the menu had two types of kaas brood, "old"
and "young" (I don't remember the Dutch spelling ...), which apparently
indicated how long the cheese was aged or how sharp it was. I chose the
"old" kaas brood, and it was very tasty. The bread was not a roll, nor a
baguette, but rather thickly sliced broad bread, similar to Italian bread. I
agree that French sandwiches on baguettes (my favorite is Camembert), which
one can buy inexpensively on the street, are more filling.

My wife's theory on why the waitress was nonresponsive to Käsebrot is not
that she didn't understand it, but rather that she didn't want to make any
concessions to someone who might be German. I have no idea whether her
theory has any merit...

As for your wife's experiences with foreigners in Britain, Americans can
have problems even with some native British accents, and some Scottish
accents (e.g., Glasgow) are totally incomprehensible.

Buddhist content: Buddha would have been very pleased to learn that after
the town of Leiden turned back the advance of the Spanish Catholics, in
effect saving Holland from Catholic rule, the ruler offered them as a reward
anything they wished. Instead of asking for gold, silver, or political
perks, they requested that a university be established there. Both the
University and the watchtower castle from which the townfolk oversaw the
battle are still there, awaiting Richard's visit.
