There is a fascinating passage in the Discourses on Causation that presents an alternate chain of dependent arising which leads towards liberation rather than suffering. It is 'dependent liberation.' Joy, happiness and rapture are included.
Samyutta Nikaya XII, 3, §23
Perhaps joy is not emphasized in the teachings because the experience of anatta must be established first. Otherwise joy is too easily confused with sense pleasures.
Thank you for mentioning Gach's work associating the beauty of nature as an expansion of mudita. Interesting! Did he trace this back to China?
