I confess as well.

The incessant hucksterism is odious. The greatest goods vs. the greatest
good: what's the answer? Little wonder The New York Times bought About.com,
since they understand very well the business of media: mediating readers to
advertisers.

However, this ain't the reason I'd decline to be a guest on Oprah, or write
an Op-Ed for The New York Times.

I confess. I need root canal work, and as a self-employed writer have no
insurance.  There's little interest in spirituality on the lecture circuit;
I only possess a B.A. so teaching gigs seem out of reach, except for the
occasional guest lecture. Plus the possibility of the demise of rent
control in San Francisco (a recent state ballot proposition came dangerously
close to eliminating it) necessitates I beat the bushes for extra income.

I have my own problems with About.com thus far, but hope that if they
elevate me to be their house Dharma Whore, that I not be blocked from the
rare edification and uplift of being a denizen of Buddha-L. The validity
of our dear moderator's responsa notwithstanding. I realize I would not go
with RH's blessings, but hope not to be cursed; I have enough problems.

This is interesting.
