[Buddha-l] prostrations, anti-Israel and anti-semitism

Hi Lara,
You are so right about wahhabism being a non-majority Islamic
sect. But the Islamic world is slowly getting there. Why? because
the Saudis have been propagating wahhabism in various
countries with Muslim majorities (and also minorities) all over
the world for at least two decades now, if not more,
courtesy of their zillions of petrodollars. How is it done?
By building mosques and religious schools and establishing wahhabist
imams and teachers in them, either for free (to such areas as
Bangladesh and southern Thailand, to name only two) or for no-interest
loans. (The Thai Muslims of southern Thailand never used to wear
hijab nor did the men grow beards until the Saudi propagandists
got through to them. Bangladeshi villagers never punished women by
stoning until the wahhabis got through to the villagers.)
Some of the Sunni Gulf states similarly contributed to the movement.
Those generations so indoctrinated are now adults, susceptible
to jihadist propaganda and goals fostered by wahhabi missionaries and
imams.
Has there been a reaction to this historical movement among Muslims?
Yes, among mostly western-educated Muslims from many different
countries a movement to reform Islam is growing.

I write this for the record, without reference to the bile
posted by Thomas Fink.

A conversation about problems with Wahabi Islam is a
totally different conversation - perhaps the kind of
productive and engaged conversation one could have
with anyone on this list or any Muslim in one's
neighborhood. A blanket call against Islam as a
religion of hate, marking every religious practice of
a billion people (most not Wahabis) as cultivation of
hate, is ignorant and racist. There is a big
difference. The latter helps to alientate and
demoralize people. It is hate speech and requires
response.

The climate of fear even on this list is such that
people who share my views always respond off-list. For
everyone's information, I have had a number of
students at my university approach me to thank me for
saying something, anything against some of the
hateful, essentializing material that shows up here.
