Re: Re: [Buddha-l] Re: Natural lucidity for Socrates .....You are but human
like the rest of us, save that you are always busy and up to no good,
traveling so many miles from your home, a nuisance to yourself and to
others!... Soon you will be dead, and then you will own just as much of the
earth as will suffice to bury you."

=========================
In the days of Alexander and for a few centuries later, rulers could never
be certain that their legacies and conquests could be ensured to future
generations of their heirs, inclding their own chosen heirs, since fairly
often if not most of the time such heirs ended up dead sooner than later--
as someone else usurped the throne and the conquest (vide, e.g., the ancient
kings in Central Asia, or the Mughals). So in those days and for some
centuries, the Jains were right.

Today, under the regime of global capitalism, the words of wisdom attributed
either to Jains or to Zhuangzi or both no longer hold since, although the
individual ends up occupying a small piece of earth or a chipped urn, his
heirs are allowed to continue the familial ownership of gigantic amounts of
land and material resources. The human mind hasn't changed, but its
unenlightened effects certainly have. This wasn't and isn't called the Kali
Yuga for nothing. Way back when, the philosophers,
holy men, whatever, those who understood the workings of the human mind,
knew what was up even then.
