[Buddha-l] The root of ignorance?

With great fear and trepidation I submit that I that I have always
thought of ignorance as the lack of something and that absences
cannot arise.
I hope this doesn't kick off that awful (in the old sense) discussion
of the presence of absence again. Or was it the absence of presents?
