You obviously need to learn some history. Try these excellent comparative 
studies as resources:

William Theodore De Bary. _The Buddhist Tradition : In India, China and 
Japan_. Vintage, 1972. (used copies available for cents over a dollar at 
amazon.com)

Edward L. Farmer,Gavin Hambly, David Kopf, B. K. Marshall.
_Comparative History of Civilizations in Asia_.
Reading, Mass. : Addison-Wesley Pub. Co., 1977. 2 v.
and later, Westview Press; Reprint edition, 1986.

This one probably more available via a good library.
