Did the Buddha really said desire (chanda) have to be eliminated?
It is generally agreed on by most commentators and interpreters
that Shakyamuni Buddha meant selfish desire caused by our illusory sense of
separateness from others. For example, bodhisattvas in the Mahayana tradition
desire that all sentient beings may become enlightened and liberated, and that
all may know happiness and freedom from suffering. "Desire" is the fuel in
our tank that we use to improve our practice but, of course, it must never
involve attachment and clinging to results.
