I make regular donations to Buddhist charities with which I am involved 
and last year I donated substantially to a monastery.  But I have began 
to question this rather lopsided approach. I donated to major disasters 
last year, but this was much less than the monastery.  What concerns me 
the most is two things: the provision of clean water and the welfare of 
children. I also favour donating to help others provide voluntary help.
