While none of them go into the detail that later Tibetan traditions do, some early Indian Buddhist schools did maintain that there was an "intermediate state" between death and rebirth. One good piece on this is:

Alex Wayman, 'The Intermediate-State Dispute in Buddhism', Buddhist Studies in Honour of I. B. Horner, eds. L. Cousins et al. (Dordrecht, 1974), p. 230.

This essay also appears in George Elder, ed., *Buddhist Insight: Essays by Alex Wayman* (Motilal Banarsidass, 1984)
