A site with photos of Nalanda's ruins includes this in the intro to the
pictures:
"...in 1193, the Nalanda University was sacked by the fanatic Bakhtiyar
Khilji, a Turk during the period of Muslim conquest in India. The Persian
historian Minhaj-i-Siraj, in his chronicle the Tabaqat-I-Nasiri, reported
that thousands of monks were burned alive and thousands beheaded as Khilji
tried his best to uproot Buddhism the burning of the library continued for
several months."

Have a look. (There are also other sites posting pictures of Nalanda as
well -- google it).
Additional sites, showing that none of this should be unknown or esoteric
information:

A more detailed version of the story about asking about the contents of the
Nalanda library gives a more sinister, less ironic account. Bakhtiyar Khilji
asked: "Is there a Qur'an in this library?" and when he was told no, he
ordered that the place be torched.
