The line I have seen dozens of times from Chinese people is that Tibetans are China's Apaches―a backwards, uncivilized, tribal race that has benefited immeasurably by being educated and given the benefits of technology. The Tibetans who accept civilization gracefully are like the "good" Apache Cochise, and those who want to keep Tibetans a bunch of uncouth savages are like the "bad" Apache Geronimo (whose image now appears on T-shirts and coffee mugs with the slogan "fighting terrorism since 1492").
