[Buddha-l] Which Buddhists believe in rebirth?

I have met Buddhists from SE Asia and some from Japan who believe in  
rebirth along with spirits, petition praying to the Buddha and magic. Others  
from the same country do not.
 
The views seem to break down into exoteric and esoteric, terms I have never 
 found to be satisfactory to me. Saying the learned and the great unwashed  
doesn't work either.
