I think what happens is that hyperlinks are taken out by the software, but
if the text *is* a URL, most reading software will turn it back into a link.
If the visible text is a "pretty" hyperlink, not the URL itself, I think it
gets lost. Let's try:

*This <http://www.guardian.co.uk/> * is being sent as a hyperlink to my
usual newspaper: http://www.guardian.co.uk/. If my guess is correct, only
the second one will work. If I'm wrong, I'll eat humble pie from a pasty
shop in Leeds train station.
