I always thought he wore the caps and visors when on stage. to keep the lights out of his eyes.

He has a habit of wearing the local hat when giving a talk. When
in Massechussetts he wore a Patriots hat (the very popular NFL
Football team):

He is wearing a USC (University of Southern California) hat,
since that was where he was delivering the talk. He seems to like
red hats -- do the yellow hats know?
