I have done the same and drawn the line there. Once in a while I have downloaded a PDF to distribute to a class electronically, but only of something I already own and want to save myself the tedium of scanning. (Part of the craziness of budget cuts at a state university is that higher-paid faculty now do more of the work that lower-paid staff used to do before they were laid off in the name of balancing the state budget to create jobs.) I may download a whole book and then use my electronic scissors to cut out the one chapter I'd like for them to read and post it on line, which seems about the same as the old-fashioned method of putting a book on reserve in the library and assigning a chapter. Not that students read what's assigned, but that's another story for another day.
