...I'm not sure what to think of the bodhisattva vow to rescue
countless beings, is this acting while letting go of all hope?

Looks like faith, to me. Faith doesn't require hope------it is
total trusting.
Meanwhile, the bodhisattva vow strikes me as the ultimate piety
in a scheme that
views "reality" as "mind/thought projections/creations".  

Pragmatism doesn't figure in this spiritual economy.
