I never did read "Prisoners of Shangri-La, so I can't comment
directly.
There is, however, a reason why I decided not to invest that much
of my short life in it: the patronizing contempt that Lopez shows
for his audience in the piece "7 things you didn't know about
Tibet"

I am not a totally ignorant, stupid twerp, and am not drawn to
reading a book by an author who assumes that I am.
