Richard Hayes <rhayes at unm.edu> writes
The Buddha is saying that that which has
been acquired by chanting verses is not suitable to be eaten by him.
Thanks Richard. I thought that may have been the case. However, later on
in the second (better?) translation of the sutra, it says:
"Brahman, in the world of Devas, Maras, and Brahmas or among the
generation of recluses, brahmanas, deities, and humans, there is no one
by whom this milk rice, if eaten, could be wholly digested except by the
Tathagata (the Buddha), or the disciple of a Tathagata."
Of course, the Buddha would not have chanted for his supper anyway, so I
do not see the relevance of the last part of this paragraph.
