I don't remember where I heard this and don't remember all the details.  
The Zen Master presents koans to his students. Some koans involve the  
student's reaction to authority.The Zen Master presented a verbal koan. When  the 
student would try to answer, the teacher would prod him with his staff.  The 
answer to the koan was for the student to take the stick away from the  
master.
