You are thinking perhaps of the Mahabharata, where Dharmaraj
Yudhishtira tells the gods he would not enter swarga without his
dog, so the dog was allowed.

Didn't this story of the dog and refusal to leave him behind
originate in pre-Buddhist India? Or was it in India after the
Buddha?
