That originated in Japan over a decade ago, and has now spread throughout
Asia. The Japanese called it "tea hair". It began among the youth (trying to
look different, but all ending up looking different in the same way), and
how has been around long enough that it can be found among middle agers as
well. Used to be that youth colored their hair until their first job and
then went back to normal. Nowadays even employed people may have colored
hair. Monks shave their heads, so the above does not apply.
