I am having a déjà vu--------I vaguely recall that Kopf published
another article in response to criticism of his review in the
first JAS article.  I suspect the one you found was the rebuttal.
Maybe I was citing the rebuttal (since the pages match) and got
THAT date wrong. I can check this up (for once) at our local
university library.

Hello all,
Thank you, Joanna, for the reference to David Kopf's article,
"Hermeneutics versus History" in the Journal of Asian Studies. I
was able to track it down at the pages you cited (495-506) but in
the journal's volume 39, no. 3 (May, 1980). This may make it
easier for others to find this article.

that we read the following corrective review of his book that was
published in 1978:
