On what's derogatory and what's not... reminds me of a skit by the 
comedian Russells Peters... a black women was on her first visit to 
Beijing. (From memory...) She was in a KFC ordering at the counter. At 
the other counter was a Chinese lady and her young son. The lady asked 
her son in Chinese what he wants. He says "nei ge... nei ge..." The 
black woman grew furious (and I forgot the rest of the joke.) "Nei ge" 
is a slang of "na ge" ("that one") and is the Chinese equivalent of 
"umm...." (the stall in speech).

I too have to often tell my friends here not to refer to things Japanese 
as "Jap".
