I wonder if any of the world's journals have thought of starting
a cartoon contest about contemporary Burma, the un-Buddhist
Buddhist state. It could outdo the old Soviet cartoons about
capitalism, or the Danish cartoons about you know who.

Pro-Democracy Leader in Myanmar Is Convicted

BANGKOK - Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese pro-democracy leader,
was sentenced Tuesday to three years of hard labor for violating
the terms of her house arrest, but her sentence was quickly
commuted to a new term of house arrest of up to 18 months.
