Dear Joanna,
we in Germany have a different attitude to nuclear power stations.
The 'Schnelle Brüter'/'Fast Breeder' build in the seventies at Kalkar at the 'Lower Rhine Region' (there where the River Rhine enters the Netherlands) now is a family park.
begin quote from http://explorer.altopix.com/map/a32dw1/Kernwasser_Wunderland.htm
"The Fast Breeder nuclear reactor SNR-300 was built near the town of Kalkar, Germany (located in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It was completed but never taken online. It is known as one of the biggest government spending boondoggles in Germany. SNR-300 was to output 327 megawatt. The project ended up costing about 7 billion Deutsche Mark (about. 3,5 Billion Euro or over 4 billion USD)."
end quote
The nuclear power station was planned to run by plutonium to expect to 'breed' more nuclear material than it burns like the French 'Super Phenix'.
After the waste of the enormous sum of money and doubts about the technical concept that was not proven before ,the area was sold to a Dutchman for 200000 Deutsche Mark and he first openend it as a technical museum with gastronomy.
I had the opportunity to visit it at that time an to look into the vessel for the nuclear core, the control station and all the other technical stuff.
It was called 'Kernwasser Wunderland' literally translated 'Nukewater Wonderland' there 'Kernwasser' means 'heavy water'.
After becoming more an more a family park with hotels, merry go rounds an the opportunity to climb the cooling tower it changed its name to 'Kernies
Familienpark'/'Nukies Family Park'.
The latest news there that you can run a race with American toy dragsters originally imported from the US.
