As always with these sorts of things... the purpose is to hide real 
worries - like rising food prices, insufficient infrastructure to deal 
with freak weather, fall outs from a U.S. recession etc.

Same goes for the U.S. - all the buzz about the elections hide the real 
issues that none of the candidates really goes into in depth.
