The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies invites
applications for a tenure-track position teaching Buddhism and
religions of Asia in Fall 2009. This position is contingent on
funds being available at the time of hire. Area of specialization
may be any major Buddhist tradition; preference will be given to
candidates who demonstrate competency in pre-modern periods while
demonstrating an ability to relate their work to contemporary
Buddhist societies. Aplicants should possess a high level of
proficiency in relevant languages. An ability to teach religious
traditions of Hinduism or Taoism is desirable. Applicants should
be able to teach introductory survey courses in religious studies
as well as upper level courses in the candidate's area of
specialization. Teaching load is
3 courses per semester for the first three years with
consideration of scholarly accomplishments thereafter. Evidence
of strong undergraduate teaching is essential. The successful
candidate will participate actively in the undergraduate program
of the department as well as in interdisciplinary efforts and
area studies initiatives within the College of Liberal Arts. An
earned doctorate is required. Candidates who are ABD will be
considered for initial appointment as an instructor; all terminal
degree requirements must be complete by February 1, 2010.
