And might there also be discussion of 'sovereignty' and 'suzerainty' and their Tibetan equivalents? Important in terms of British imperial legacies in the Tibet-China situation.
Cheers,
Charles

The author of the blog Richard nance references says the term for
independence from the 1965 originated Tibetan Autonomous Region
TAR is slightly different (?): rang-btsan.

"Rang-dbang and rang-btsan are words used by Tibetan
nationalists, often rendered 'self-determination.' There is also,
nowadays, the relatively innocuous expression rang-skyong,
'self-governance' or 'autonomy' which occurs in the official name
"Tibetan Autonomous Region" or T.A.R."

As we know from other languages, there tend to be more words than
one, in many languages if not all, to signify various concepts.

Thanks to Richard for posting this interesting discussion of the
two concepts, independence and autonomy, and an interesting blog.

Cheers,
Joanna

==========
Joanna -- to supplement Jim Blumenthal's helpful comment, you
might want to have a look at Dan Martin's brief discussion of the
relevant Tibetan terms on the Tibeto-logic blog. The post is here
(though you may want to poke around a bit; the blog as a whole is
superb):

Best wishes,
