You have told us the answer: Pierre Hadot. I couldn't agree more. As I 
mentioned in a response to Joy, I found Hadot's approach to Marcus Aurelius 
and to the early Christians very helpful. Comparing Marcus Aurelius (or a 
number of other Stoics) to Santideva (or a number of other Buddhists) also 
yields beneficial fruits. Stephen Batchelor's translation of Santideva is by 
no means my favorite, but I think he has a lot of sensitivity to what 
Santideva was up to. I don't know for sure, but I'd guess that Batchelor 
would also love Hadot. So it seems that Messrs Steinmetz, Hayes and Batchelor 
are all pretty much on the same page after all.
