Archaeologists make estimates, but given the limited amount of
archaeology that has been done, they may not be very reliable yet. Of
course, one has to know the date of the Buddha in order to know which
archaeological estimates apply. In general, they are lower than would
be suggested by the texts, especially in much later texts. But we are
in the period of the growth of cities in the Gangetic plain.
