If one believes in souls it is not that strange to believe that a soul needs to live somewhere. In fact it's more unexpected to see Buddhists believe in the various places where a soul lives, but without believing in a soul. And then they claim that belief is vital as well... Has one ever seen more talented eel-wrigglers? :-)

In Catholicism, the imagery never stopped. If it did, you got burned and/or excommunicated, unless you retracted. Then you got the right to rot in jail. Must be because of incarnation.
