I once asked Norbu Rche if it was permitted to replace a candle with an 
electric torch, he said 'no, because you have to offer fire'. He also 
used to cut a dozen juniper trees to make a huge smoke cloud. He did it 
outdoors, but still it stimulates global warming. He called it sang 
(smoke) puja, we had to walk through the smoke and say  mantras.
