Vincente --
Jan Nattier provides a brief but useful note on the underlying
Sanskrit terms (kulaputra and kuladuhit.r) in her study and
translation of the _Ugraparip.rcchaa_. See her _A Few Good Men_
(Honolulu: University of Hawai'i Press, 2003), pp. 212 (footnote 33).
In part, Nattier's note reads as follows:
"I have eschewed the well-established Buddhist Hybrid English
expressions "son of good family" and "daughter of good family" both
because they are needlessly wooden and because they fail to capture
the nuance of the underlying Indian terms. As used in Buddhist texts,
at least -- I have not made a comparative study of their use in other
Indian literature -- these are simply polite expressions referring to
the person in question as of 'good birth' in a formulaic way."
Hope this helps a bit,
R. Nance
