Yes it works - on PC or Mac - and Ubuntu will send you CDs free of
charge if you ask. see: <https://shipit.ubuntu.com/> or you can download
CD image from <http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download>
One CD is a "live CD" which means you can try it out without having to
install on your system. The Ubuntu CDs also come with Windows versions
of OpenOffice.org, Firefox, and several other free & open source
applications.
All versions of Linux are generally a little harder to install than
Windows (at least if you are used to Windows) - but once you do get it
set up it is usually far more stable. It also takes a while
to get familiar with a new operating system and applications if you have
been using something else for years.
The Ubuntu Live CD may not work with some laptops or the very latest
graphics cards etc. as they cannot fit every driver on a single CD
along with a working copy of Linux, applications etc.
