My favorite "neo-Darwin" book right now (I change about every two  
years) is W. O. Wilson's "The Diversity of Life". He has the best  
discussion I have seen of the "mass extinctions" of which we are now  
the cause of the most severe one ever. He also has really good  
chapters on things like what is a species and how speciation occurs.  
A very readable book and extremely informative (lots of information/ 
page).
