Interesting picture----------thanks. Would you mind spelling out the entire 
illustration? what do the clouds stand for? the monkey? one figure seems
to be carrying a double whip.

  Here is the picture.  It is found in my Tibetan temples.  A similiar story is told in Zen, with an Ox, not an elephant.

  While I found the list you sent of stages of Samatha of potential personal use, I wonder about the mixed metaphors in this part. Was this an extended explanation of a picture? Without the picture it seems rather incoherent.  
  (I also have trouble imagining a monk mounting an elephant--sorry, the expression evoked a guffaw.)
