Stephen is correct of course, the characters for Yamabushi are 山伏 。Sorry for
the misinformation - No wonder I couldn't find much on google.

The entry in the Japanese-English Buddhist Dictionary says:

"Ascetics who dwell mainly in the mountains. Their major center is Kumano,
Omine. They trace their line of transmission to Ennogyoja. The yamabushi are
affiliated with either the Tendai or the Shingon Sect. The former controls
them from the Miidera and the later from the Daigoji."

Stephen, would you be willing to tell us more about your time in Japan?
Sounds interesting.

Regards

Bankei
