I found it. One of the stories in Fariduddin Attar's Conference of the
Birds.
It's the story of the Sheikh Sam'an. I got the story line a bit wrong, and
it's long,
but I won't disclose what happened, best to read it. In the Penguin edition
of 1984, translated by Afkham Darbandi and Dick Davis, it starts on p.71.
Quite a tale.
