Tilmann Vetter observes that the development of paticca samupada as a set of
12 nidanas must have been a later addition, as there are few places in the
Canon where the Buddha treats them as a whole. See 'The Khandha Passages in
the Vinayapitaka and the four main Nikāyas', 2000.
