I think rather, back then there had not yet developed the artifical split
between the quantitative and qualitative aspects of things that we take for
granted nowadays. The Mayans (for example) measured the quantitative cycles
as well as most, but also understood those cycles as macrocosmic
correspondances to personal and human cycles (which is what astrology is).
