"Robert Morrison" writes:

: German interest, scholarly and otherwise, in Native Americans is
: traceable to the wild popularity of James Fennimore Cooper's novels,
: which were actually received more enthusiastically by German readers
: than they were at first by his fellow countrymen - who were, after all,
: still basically a bunch of British snobs who had never heard of this
: Cooper fellow.

: For what its worth, German interest in cowboy and Indian novels was started
: by a 19th cent. German writer called Karl May. He wrote tons of them and
: was extremely popular. Hitler is said to have devoured his books (perhaps he
: picked up some ideas from them!).

Remembering the job that Mark Twain did on Cooper, I would say that
Karl May was a far better writer than Cooper.

Karl May is the author of my favorite footnote: "Ich komme aus dem
schwartz und blutigen grund des Westens," which translates the
English line with the same meaning that in the text of _Winnetou_.
