It's even a bit neater in Japanese. The "is that so?" is Sou desuka
(pronounced so deska), which is a common interogative exclamation every
Japanese person uses when responding noncommittally to something. Something
like the English "Oh?" -- neither affirms, nor denies, adds nothing, except
that the speaker has heard the previous speaker say something.
