Of course, this is generally true. Although there was, at least in
Germany, a buddhist movement before the hippies came. Mostly Theravadin
but in case of Lama Govinda and his students even Vajrayana people.
Today they are nearly all gone but I remember still some of this
sometimes quite impressive old women and men. Most of them had a
certain attitude ... they knew it all. They knew exactly what buddhism
is and what it is not. Most of them did not come along well with each
other. Which reminds me that all the precepts for lay people as for
nuns and monks have or had the essence of supporting non-aggression.
When teaching turns into preaching even the proclamation of right
speech, right action etc. can be an act of aggression. It does not
matter then how humble you act outwards.
